My Most Anticipated Movies Of June

While looking at the June movie schedule you may not be as excited as the other Summer months, but what the month may lack in volume like May for example, it now has the opportunity to make up for in quality as June offers your usual blockbusters but also some indie releases that have tons of potential.  So here are the movies I’m most looking forward to in June with Ted 2 being left on the shelf because the trailers look awful…just awful.

Entourage – June 5 (Nationwide)

I’m not even sure how excited I am for this one but I was a fan of the series for the first few seasons and then the antics of the Entourage crew just started to wear thin.  Smartly they’ve given some time between the end of the series and the movie so now I’m actually pretty excited to see how they’re going to wrap up the saga.  The trailer looks so fun, like the first few seasons before it got bogged down so I’m optimistic that they can keep this one fun and light and bring a good end to the story…let’s all keep our fingers crossed.

Jurassic World – June 12 (Nationwide)

Chris Pratt’s plan on world domination continues as we return to the world of Jurassic Park.  I was so excited for this when the teaser trailer dropped with the lonely piano theme in the background but the more I’ve seen of this one, the less excited I get.  Genetically modified dinosaurs, forced Chris Pratt quips and what looks to be almost carbon copied situations from the original have me rethinking my excitement but it’s a blockbuster and some of the effects do look pretty astonishing.  I’m hoping that with all of the talent involved and the pedigree of the franchise we get a solid film and not just a loud movie pushed out for money.

Me And Earl And The Dying Girl – June 12 (Limited)

Heartfelt and soulful, be careful or this movie just may win your heart.  I’ve been hearing about this movie for months now and how impactful and well acted it is and the trailer sure shows you all of that.  Thomas Mann finally gets a chance to lead a film which is great because he’s put in some great supporting performances and once again Nick Offerman and Connie Britton will give fantastic presence to a film that will allow true emotion to creep into those bright Summer days.

Inside Out – June 19 (Nationwide)

I will forever trust in Pixar.  While to me the Cars franchise has been their weakest efforts it’s still better than 95% of things out there and if there’s one thing that Pixar excels at it’s bringing high concept, adult themes to animated features.  Add to all of this the quality of the people involved as Pete Docter, who directed the incredible Up, goes behind the camera with voice acting from the likes of Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, Mindy Kaling, Lewis Black and the underrated Phyllis Smith from The Office.  Pixar’s quality and reputation is unmatched and I’m excited to see this one maybe more than any other on the list.

Infinitely Polar Bear – June 19 (Limited)

Mark Ruffalo is one of the most talented actors working in film today, the fact that he can play Bruce Banner and be in this intimate look at manic depressive behavior just highlights his range.  There is Oscar buzz about his performance here and the trailer certainly shows why.  It also shows such a small and intimate story which can be such a great change of pace in the Summer blockbuster season.

Dope – June 19 (Nationwide)

Another welcome curveball to the Summer movie season, Dope looks like a fun, yet serious movie about a coming of age tale in inner city high school.  There’s a silliness to the movie with animations and great supporting characters but also the seriousness of what it means to be surrounded by drugs and gangs.  What I’m most looking forward to is the lead performance of Shameik Moore, who from advanced screenings, is said to give a powerful and soulful performance.

Batkid Begins – June 26 (Limited)

God, get the kleenex ready…seriously.  I’ve watched the trailer twice now and each time I can’t help but tear up.  We all heard of the story and it’s gonna be great to see all of the hard work that went into making this one child’s dream come true and how it affected not just him but people all over the world.  Seriously though, bring the kleenex.

Big Game – June 26 (Limited)

Okay, I have no illusions as to how bad this movie looks and probably will turn out to be, but doesn’t it look like it could just be kind of awesome?!  One of those movies where you don’t even care about the story but is just one fun and crazy action scene after another and you walk away with a big smile on your face.  Samuel L Jackson will undoubtedly have one liners ready to unload and just turn off your brain and enjoy…well hopefully.

So there are the movies of June that I’m keeping my eye on.  I’m not expecting anything to completely blow me away like the incredible Mad Max: Fury Road but there is an opportunity here for a movie to completely surprise and delight you.  Let’s get out there and enjoy!
